Case Study: Enhancing Boarding Efficiency for Iceland Air

Iceland Air, a leading airline recognized for its commitment to passenger experience and operational efficiency, faced challenges in its airport lounge access process. Due to size constraints, their existing scanners struggled to read certain sizes of boarding passes or device types, causing delays and increasing staff workload.

IEG Business Solutions, in collaboration with COMINFO, worked to address these issues by implementing a more efficient and user-friendly access control system that would streamline lounge entry while maintaining security and accuracy.

The Challenge

Iceland Air encountered significant difficulties in scanning boarding passes at lounge entry points, leading to:

  • Scanner limitations: The scanner window was too small, making it unable to read longer barcodes.
  • Passenger behavior: Travelers frequently placed their boarding passes too close to the scanner, further reducing readability.
  • Increased staff intervention: Lounge agents had to manually instruct passengers on how to position their boarding passes correctly, slowing down the entry process and increasing operational strain.

This inefficiency resulted in longer wait times, passenger frustration, and additional staff workload, making it clear that a more advanced and reliable solution was necessary.

The Solution

To address these challenges, IEG Business Solutions and COMINFO collaborated with Iceland Air to explore a more seamless access control system. COMINFO representative Josef worked closely with Iceland Air to evaluate and enhance their current setup.

The proposed solution included the EasyGate Elite speed gates, which offered key benefits such as:
Advanced scanning technology capable of reading a variety of barcode sizes effortlessly.
Optimized sensor positioning, allowing for more accurate and faster scans without requiring passengers to adjust their boarding pass placement.
Hands-free access capabilities, reducing the need for direct interaction with lounge agents and expediting the lounge entry process.

Implementation & Results

Although the final resolution is still in progress, early results indicate:

  • Reduced staff intervention, as passengers can now access the lounge with minimal guidance.
  • Faster lounge entry, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
  • Operational efficiency improvements, allowing lounge staff to focus on hospitality rather than manual access control.

Customer Satisfaction & Feedback

While Iceland Air is still assessing the long-term impact, initial feedback suggests that the updated scanning solution is effectively addressing key access issues. The technical team from COMINFO has been highly responsive, providing timely support and ensuring smooth implementation.

Future Collaborations

Beyond Iceland Air, IEG and COMINFO are also working on similar projects with Aegean Airlines, further strengthening their partnership in delivering cutting-edge airport lounge access solutions.
